چکیده

This paper investigates Bayesian modeling of unknown causes of events in the context of disease-outbreak detection. We introduce a Bayesian approach that models and detects both (1) known diseases (e.g., influenza and anthrax) by using informative prior probabilities and (2) unknown diseases (e.g., a new, highly contagious respiratory virus that has never been seen before) by using relatively non-informative prior probabilities. We report the results of simulation experiments which support that this modeling method can improve the detection of new disease outbreaks in a population. A key contribution of this paper is that it introduces a Bayesian approach for jointly modeling both known and unknown causes of events. Such modeling has broad applicability in medical informatics, where the space of known causes of outcomes of interest is seldom complete.

Multivariate Bayesian modeling of known and unknown causes of events - An application to biosurveillance

This paper investigates Bayesian modeling of known and unknown causes of events in the context of disease-outbreak detection. We introduce a multivariate Bayesian approach that models multiple evidential features of every person in the population. This approach models and detects (1) known diseases (e.g., influenza and anthrax) by using informative prior probabilities and (2) unknown diseases (...

A Bayesian Biosurveillance Method That Models Unknown Outbreak Diseases

Algorithms for detecting anomalous events can be divided into those that are designed to detect specific diseases and those that are non-specific in what they detect. Specific detection methods determine if patterns in the data are consistent with known outbreak diseases, as for example influenza. These methods are usually Bayesian. Non-specific detection methods attempt broadly to detect devia...

Bayesian Biosurveillance of Disease Outbreaks

Early, reliable detection of disease outbreaks is a critical problem today. This paper reports an investigation of the use of causal Bayesian networks to model spatio-temporal patterns of a non-contagious disease (respiratory anthrax infection) in a population of people. The number of parameters in such a network can become enormous, if not carefully managed. Also, inference needs to be perform...

Integrating a Commuting Model with the Bayesian Aerosol Release Detector

The Bayesian Aerosol Release Detector (BARD) is a biosurveillance system for detecting and characterizing disease outbreaks caused by aerosol releases of anthrax. A major challenge in modeling a population’s exposure to aerosol anthrax is to accurately estimate the exposure level of each individual. In part, this challenge stems from the fact that the only spatial information routinely containe...

مدل یابی انتشار بیماری های عفونی بر اساس رویکرد آماری بیز

Background and Aim: Health surveillance systems are now paying more attention to infectious diseases, largely because of emerging and re-emerging infections. The main objective of this research is presenting a statistical method for modeling infectious disease incidence based on the Bayesian approach.Material and Methods: Since infectious diseases have two phases, namely epidemic and non-epidem...
